Privileged access on location in Mecca gives viewers of this National Geographic production insight into the universal principles of Islam and shows the  historic significance of the city to both Muslims and non-Muslims .

“Inside Mecca” follows three pilgrims throughout their journey, highlighting their physical and mental preparation, the strain induced by the pilgrimage itself and the spiritual ecstasy experienced upon arrival.

Inside Mecca is now recognized as a must-see classic film on the Hajj.

About Anisa Mahdi


Artistic Director of “Documentary Voices,” Anisa Mehdi is an Emmy award-winning journalist and filmmaker specializing in religion and arts.  She is President of Whetstone Productions, a boutique production and consulting firm based in New Jersey. 

Mehdi has reported news from and made documentary films in Algeria, Egypt, France, Iran, Jordan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey and the USA.  For ABC News Nightline, Mehdi produced a series of programs on Muslim views about faith and on stereotyping in popular media.  She is the winner of two Emmys, a CINE Golden Eagle and numerous prizes from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Mehdi holds a Masters Degree in Journalism from Columbia University and B.A. cum laude in Spanish Language and Literature from Wellesley College.  She is a Trustee of the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and sits on the Board of Directors of Music for All Seasons.  She plays flute and piccolo in the Livingstone Symphony Orchestra.

The daughter of an Iraqi father and a Canadian mother, Anisa Mehdi is an active voice in Arab-American politics and interreligious education. She is currently in Jordan as a Fulbright Scholar.
