The Royal Film Commission Jordan | The First Jordanian Screening of “STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER”

The First Jordanian Screening of
Amman – Thursday 19th December 2019
Some 850 people attended - yesterday in Amman – a cinematic event that is eagerly-awaited by fans of science fiction movies and film buffs around the world: The screening of “STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER” by American film director J.J. Abrams.
The film’s first Jordanian screening was under the Patronage of Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein and organized by the Royal Film Commission – Jordan in the presence of the local crew.
Partly filmed in the Kingdom in November 2017, Wadi Rum emerges as a dazzling backdrop to the popular sci-fi movie. Abrams specifically chose Jordan's Wadi Rum and Shakriah areas as the exotic, epic location for “a galaxy far far away,” incorporating their unique light, sand shades and rock formations to serve as the story’s decor.

The festive ceremony of the first Jordanian screening took place at the high-tech Taj Cinemas (Taj Mall). The film screening was preceded by a reception which included a group of “Star Wars” film series fans, coming all the way from the USA, took part in in the event. The participants wore costumes identical to the film’s popular characters and performed a show with the spirit of “May the Force be with You!”.

Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, Chairman of the Board of The Royal Film Commission, said he was very pleased by and proud of this event: “When looking at the international map of filming locations, Jordan has a remarkable spot of its own, as a unique destination for filming. This is the largest production Jordan has ever hosted. We are proud of the skilled local crew, which helped materialize on the silver screen the ending of a saga that so many of us grew up with.” He added: “That Jordan hosted such a huge production that was shot over the course of three weeks, plus four months’ preparation time, is a natural outcome of the country’s enabling environment which we owe to its diversity, its modern infrastructure, its financial incentives, its high quality services and last but not least the support offered by the State’s institutions.”

The foreign production worked with more than 250 Jordanian crew across every department including camera, costume, creatures, special effects and stunts, in addition to employing more than 1000 resident from Wadi Rum’s area. The production of the film has spent 15 million USD while shooting in Jordan.

Earlier in the day, the “Star Wars” fans, donning their costumes, performed a special show for children from the King Hussein Cancer Center. The kids greeted them with great enthusiasm and took photos during their visit to the Center.

The Jordanian capital was the third leg of the film’s tour after its World Premiere in the USA and simultaneously with the European Premiere in the United Kingdom.

The event was made possible in large part thanks to the support of the Jordan Tourism Board, The U.S. Embassy in Jordan, Taj Cinemas, Zain and Walt Disney Studios.

“STAR WARS: THE RISE OF THE SKYWALKER” will be released in cinemas in Jordan as of today December 19th. Produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios, STAR WARS Episode IX is the conclusion and last ever episode to the Skywalker saga.
