1. . Call for submissions: The 11th Jordanian Short Film Competition as part of the 23rd Franco-Arab Film Festival

The Institut Français in Jordan, in partnership with the Royal Film Commission - Jordan (RFC), is organizing the 23rd edition of the Franco-Arab Film Festival, which will be held in Amman from the 5th until the 12th of July, 2017.

 

The Franco-Arab Film Festival is calling for Jordanian short films (documentary and narrative) to compete. Winners will be announced during the closing reception.  

 

If your short film matches the criteria below, please submit your film at the latest by Thursday 1st of June, 2017.

Submission Criteria:

- The competition is open to filmmakers residing in Jordan or abroad. Either the director or the producer should be Jordanian.

- The film must be mostly shot in Jordan.

- The film should not exceed 20 minutes.

- The film has to have been produced in 2016 or 2017.

- Each director can submit one film only.

- Only short narratives and documentaries can be submitted. Animated films or experimental films will not be accepted.

- The film must be subtitled in English or French, if it is in Arabic; or subtitled in Arabic, if it is in English or French.

- The director or producer should provide 2 DVD or Blu-ray copies of the film (which will not be returned) to the aforementioned address. Sending the film electronically by link is not acceptable.

 

The director or producer should provide the following:

1. An application form in Arabic or in English which can be found on the RFC’s website: www.film.jo 

- The application form should be typed (not in handwriting). 

- A printed hard copy of the application form along with the film copies must submitted, in addition to sending the application form by email to the following address: marian.nakho@film.jo

- The application form should cover technical details regarding the film, synopsis (40 – 100 words) and the filmmaker’s information.

2. A soft copy of the film poster or still photo should be sent to the following address: marian.nakho@film.jo

 

Note: A committee will select among the submitted films those entitled to compete.

 

Prizes:

There will be four valuable prizes: Two prizes based on the selection of the jury; and two prizes based on the audience vote for the documentary and fiction categories.  

 

The two Jury prizes for the best narrative and best documentary will be invited by the French edition of the Franco Arab Film Festival in Noisy-Le-Sec (in the close suburbs of Paris) to present their films. The full stay in France will be covered (return flight ticket; accommodation and local transportation).

 

The four winning films will receive a trophy created by Jordanian sculptor Hazem Al Zubi.

In addition, the RFC will offer a one-year subscription at the Film House’s Library to the four winners.

 

Last date for submissions is on Thursday 1st of June, 2017.

2. Call for submissions: MUHR Awards at the 14th Dubai International Film Festival

Muhr Awards submissions for the 14th edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), running from 6 until 13 December 2017, are now open.

In 2006, DIFF launched the Muhr competition for short and feature films originating from the United Arab Emirates and Arab world. The prestigious competition is heavily contested and has emerged as a definitive platform for Arab film, nurturing and rewarding filmmaking excellence in the Arab world. The competition has helped raise profiles of award recipients on the international stage and drawing attention to cinema from the region. The competition is adjudicated by prestigious international juries.

MUHR FEATURE AWARDS
- Best Muhr Fiction Feature - AED 200,000. The cash prize will be awarded to the director of the winning film
- Best Muhr non-Fiction Feature - AED 100,000. The cash prize will be awarded to the director(s) of the winning film
Special Jury Prize Muhr Feature (Fiction or Non- Fiction) - AED 50,000. The prize will be awarded to the director(s) of the winning film
- Best Director - AED 20,000
- Best Actor - AED 10,000
- Best Actress - AED 10,000


MUHR SHORT AWARDS
- Best Muhr Short – AED 50,000. The cash prize will be awarded to the director(s) of the winning film, and the winner will automatically qualify for consideration for the 2018 “©Oscar” Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
- Special Jury Prize: Muhr Short - AED 25,000. The cash prize will be awarded to the director(s) of the winning film.

MUHR GULF SHORT AWARDS
- Best Muhr Gulf Short - AED 50,000. The cash prize will be awarded to the director(s) of the winning film.
- Special Jury Prize: Muhr Gulf Short - AED 25,000. The cash prize will be awarded to the director(s) of the winning film.

MUHR EMIRATI AWARDS
- Best Muhr Emirati Short – AED 50,000 The cash prize will be awarded to the director(s) of the winning film.
- Best Emirati Director – AED 20,000

ELIGIBILITY FOR PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD:
- All feature films selected in DIFF Official Progr
am, with the exception of Cinema for Children and feature films which are out of our General Eligibility rules.
DIFF’s out of competition sections; Cinema of the World, Arabian Nights, Cinema for Children and DIFFerent Reality are curated by DIFF’s programmers and therefore not open for submissions.

GENERAL ELIGIBILITY
- In order to be eligible for the Official Programme, your film must have been completed after September 1, 2016.
- The festival requires that all short and feature films are not be commercially exhibited or released on any media platform (or window) in any country in the Arab World prior to hosting the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) Premiere. Exceptions maybe applied on a case-by-case basis.
- Films must not have been entirely or partially broadcast and/or made available on any television, the internet, mobile phones and/or any other public viewing platform worldwide until after the 14th edition of DIFF closes on 13th December, 2017.
- Films that have been submitted to earlier editions of DIFF will not be considered unless substantial changes have been made since the initial submission.

ELIGIBILITY – MUHR FEATURE AND SHORT AWARDS
- Films must be directed by a filmmaker of Arab
nationality or origin.
- The subject and storyline of the films should be centered on the Arab World, its history and/or culture.
- Feature films: Films must be a work of fiction that equals or exceeds 60 minutes in duration or non-fiction that equals or exceeds 52 minutes in duration.
- Short films: Films can be a work of fiction that does not exceed 59 minutes in duration, or non-fiction that does not exceed 51 minutes in duration.

ELIGIBILITY – MUHR GULF SHORT AWARDS
- Films must be directed by a filmmaker of Gulf
nationality or origin.
- Films can be a work of fiction that does not exceed 59 minutes in duration, or non-fiction that does not exceed 51 minutes in duration. There are no specific guidelines on the subject and storyline of the films.

ELIGIBILITY – MUHR EMIRATI AWARDS
Films must be directed by an Emirati filmmaker.

Deadline: Entries of online submission forms in English and/or Arabic and film viewing copies (to be included as a link on the submission form) must be completed and submitted by 31st August, 2017.

3. Call for entries: Talents Beirut 2017

Talents Beirut is a project that aims to support film talents from the Arab World, allowing them to reflect on their own works by connecting with other emerging and confirmed talents, and by discovering new ways to approach the art of film making, whether from technical or theoretical point of views.

It is a branch of the Berlinale Talents (formally known as the Berlinale Talent Campus) which invites every year more than 300 talents from the four corners of the globe during the Berlin International Film Festival to meet film experts and discuss film
-related matters, such as production distribution and filmmaking at large.

Qualifications:
Your application for Talents Beirut 2017 will only be processed if you meet the following requirements:
1. You have submitted a complete application, including a sample of work. Please note that the application is individual and team applications cannot be accepted. You must have obtained the consent of the other copyright owners for the use of the work sample submitted.
2. You work in one of these areas: cinematography, editing, sound design/score composition.
3. You have directly contributed to at least one short film with a credit as cinematographer, editor or sound designer/score composer, this film was screened at a recognized film festival, OR you have worked on this film with afore-mentioned credit as a student at a film school or in a film programme.
4. You must be a citizen of one of the following Arab countries: Jordan, Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. You must be residing in one of these countries and be at least 18 years of age by September 2017.
5. Participants must be fluent in English and Arabic. French is a plus.

4. Call for registration: The 5th Edition of the Europe - Orient Documentary Film Festival" in Tangier

The Moroccan Association for Media Studies and Documentary Films organizes the 5th edition of “Europe–Orient Documentary Film Festival” from 19th until 23rd of September 2017 in Tangier – Morocco.

On this occasion, the association’s committee is calling for directors from Europe, Morocco and the Orient to send their documentary films which should revolve around the Europe-Orient themes in the form of an electronic Vimeo or YouTube links.

More importantly, the documentary films must be of high quality and accompanied by the following items։
- Arabic, French and English subtitles
- A poster of the documentary film
- Concise English and Arabic synopses of the film (four lines)
- A picture of the director
- A permit from the film’s production company that allows the film to be screened in the festival’s official competition

As for the participants whose films will be selected to compete for obtaining the festival’s awards, the association is going to be in charge of their airline tickets, national trips and accommodation during the festival.

5. Call for entries: The 11th Arabic and Mediterranean Film Festival of Catalonia

Eleven years trying to fill a vacuum in the Catalan cultural scene by giving voice to Arab and Mediterranean cinema in Catalonia. The Arabic and Mediterranean Film Festival of Catalonia, that will take place from 7th until 12th November 2017, is convinced that cinema can, among other things, help us understand the world we live in, and also encourage a critical spirit. This critical  thinking that is so necessary to advance in a complex world full of challenges.

The festival will
feature a guest country, by opening the doors to the cinema of Iraq. In the Mostra of 2017, therefore, a special place will be given to films from this country.

Participation requirements:

1- Movies or documentary movies from 60 minutes, directed by directors from Arab
countries within the last
three years (unlimited for films from guest country)
2- Send a download link or DVD copy
by 4th June 2017. The film must be subtitled in
French, English or Spanish.
3- The film festival will only contact the people in charge of the selected films. The copies received will not be returned.

Selected Movies
4- If the movie is selected the following deliverables
must be sent by the 15th of July, 2017:
- Synopsis
- Biography and filmography of the director
- Photography of the director and of the film in JPG 300dpi format
- Poster of the film in JPG 300dpi format
- List of the dialogues in time code (in English, French or Spanish)

Movies’ Subtitles
5- The movies will be projected in original version, subtitled in Catalan or
Castellano. The festival will be providing subtitling for the selected movies.

Transportation
6- The Festival will be solely responsible for costs incurred for transporting the selected
movies during and in place of the exhibition and their return to the distributor once
the festival is over on a previously agreed protocol.

Promotion and circulation of the selected films
7- The owners of the film’s rights authorizes the film festival to use images (max. 3
minutes) of their film as to promote and advertise the festival through a
communication campaign.

Screenings
8- A maximum of 2 screenings will be scheduled for each selected film.

6. Call for entries: The 21st Annual Arab Film Festival - San Francisco & Los Angeles

The Arab Film Festival (AFF) is now accepting submissions to its 21st edition. The festival will take place in October 2017 (San Francisco from 13 until 22 October 2017/ Los Angeles from 26 until 29 2017).

AFF annually showcases works by independent filmmakers that provide insight into the beauty, complexity and diversity of the Arab world alongside realistic perspectives on Arab culture, art, history and politics. This year, the festival is particularly interested in animation, children’s programming and films that reflect contemporary political realities from a universal lens.

Rules and regulations:
- Films must have been produced between January 1, 2014 – June 1, 2017.
- Exhibition formats for accepted films must be in DCP format with a frame rate of 24fps at high resolution .264 or Blu-Ray Discs.
- All non-English language films must have legible English language subtitles. Exceptions are made for entries with little or no dialogue.
- The film must not be available on the internet or have been broadcast nationally on cable or satellite television prior to the festival screening, with the exception of the music video category.
- Accepted films must arrive with shipping and customs duties or taxes pre-paid.
- You may submit through FilmFreeway or submit a completed paper submission form.

Requirements:
Each official selection will require the following:

·         A password protected preview of the film sent to us through a Vimeo link

·         Completed online entry form

·         Two stills from the film (color preferred, B&W accepted).  Digital stills and press kits are preferred.  Stills must be hi-res, at least 600 dpi contain an actual shot from the film

·         One photo of the director, must be 600 dpi

·         Full cast/crew list

·         Film synopsis – 120 word logline / synopsis of the film and a 20 word logline / synopsis of film.  Short films are only required to provide the 20 word logline

·         Payment – if not paid through Filmfreeway, a check should be mailed to the festival offices

·         You may email all materials to films@arabfilmfestival.org  or upload them to  Filmfreeway.  Be sure to activate your press kit on Filmfreeway

Competition:
The Arab Film Awards will celebrate filmmakers whose original works is distinguished in their category. A pre-screening committee will select four finalists in each category after viewing all selected to be part of the competition. A five-member jury made up of important members of the film and academic communities will select the outstanding films and bestow the award of Recognition to directors in the following categories:
- Best Narrative
- Best Documentary
- Best Short Film
- Innovator Award
- Audience Award

7. Call for submissions: The International Film Festival for Environment, Health and Culture

The International Film Festival for Environment, Health, and Culture will take place from 22nd of May until 7th of June 2017 in Jakarta. was established to participate in making a cleaner and better environment, raise quality of life, and maintain intercultural relationship for better acceptance and deeper understanding of people and diversity in life. The festival's main mission is to promote films pertaining to environment, health, and culture issues, carrying strong methods of storytelling, produced with excellent technique and crafted with passion and love for humanity.

The festival receives submissions from all over the world. It accepts feature and short film, and documentary (any length).

The festival appreciates all the hard work every department contributes to make a film. With all-in-one package, juries of the festival will value various performances such as directing, cinematography, editing, performance, story, acting, sound, production design, costume design, music, etc. The festival will give separate awards, if they got selected.

Participating in the global community events, celebrating the World Health Day (7 April), World Lupus Day (10 May), World Cultural Day (21 May), and World Environment Day (5 June), the festival will conduct its Awards Ceremony in June 2017.

8. Call for submissions: The 24th Barcelona International Environmental Film Festival

The 24th Edition of Barcelona International Environmental Film Festival (FICMA) will take place from the 2nd until the 9th of November 2017 in Barcelona. It is a festival that generates a positive social change using cinema and all the artistic expressions.
 
Barcelona presents the latest film productions performed worldwide with environmental issues and helps to promote and support this kind of cinema, filmmakers and artists creating a meeting point for all these professionals.

The festival is open to any natural or legal person, of any age, who has productions completed after January 1st, 2016. If anyone wants to submit a work completed before the aforementioned date, it can only be submitted to the International Focus section. If the film is a worldwide premiere or has not yet been released in Spain, it can also be submitted to the Premiere section.
 
The subject of the films or videos must be around the environment. This includes all natural, social, cultural and human rights values that influence life on our planet at a given moment and place. That is, not only the space where we find life but the living beings, objects, water, earth, air and the relations between them, as well as such intangible elements as culture, that take place in that space.

The categories and sections included are:
a) OFFICIAL SECTION
(Productions completed after 1st of Januar, 2017)
• DOCUMENTARY (more than 60 minutes)
• DOCUMENTARY SHORT (less than 60 minutes)
• SHORT FILMS FICTION (animation included)

b) PREMIERE Worldwide premiere, European premiere, Spanish premiere or Catalonia premiere (Documentary, feature film, short film and animation)
The year of production of this films can be before than 2016

c) FOCUS*1
This non-competitive section is open to documentaries and fictions on current issues and/or of general interest. Any documentary, regardless of its production date, may be entered in this section. Documentaries entered in the official section in competition may also be entered in this section by ticking the corresponding box on the entry form.

d) PETIT FICMA AND EVERY CLASSROOM A CINEMA
This section is focused for children and schools. After the festival, the films of this section (documentaries and short films no longer than 15 minutes) will be screened at schools.

9. Call for submissions: Karlsruhe Science Film Days 2017

The second "Karlsruhe Science Film Days", upported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Karlsruher Universitätsgesellschaft, is calling for documentaries, animations, mockumentaries, societal criticism or new formats such as 360° videos: All formats are welcome.

The ZAK | Centre for Cultural and General Studies at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Wissenschaftsbüro of the Stadtmarketing Karlsruhe GmbH invite filmmakers and scientists from all over the world to submit their films on scientific topics. The best film contribution wins the "KIT Science Film Award", which is endowed with a monetary prize of 5,000 Euros.

The Award Ceremony will take place, as part of the "Science Festival EFFEKTE", on July the 2nd in Karlsruhe’ Palace Garden, Germany. The finalists will be screened at the KIT University Campus South on June 29th and 30th. The jury consists of representatives and experts from the film industry, art scene and science.

Categories:
SCIENCE FILM – Documentary
Documentary short films should not exceed a duration of 50 minutes, documentary feature films should have a duration between 51 to 120 minutes.
The topic can be freely chosen, but it must have a clear connection to science.

SCIENCE FILM – Essay Film
"Essay films" are supposed to be those works with social-critical approach and cinematic depth, which offer a different point of view on the interaction between science and society.

SCIENCE FILM – Animation
Animation and Essay films may have a duration under 15 minutes, but any length is also accepted.
The topic can be freely chosen, but it must have a clear connection to science.

SCIENCE FILM – Mockumentary
The topic of your Mockumentary can be freely chosen, but it must have a clear connection to science.

SCIENCE FILM – Feature
Feature films should have a duration between 51 to 120 minutes.
The topic can be freely chosen, but it must have a clear connection to science.

SCIENCE FILM – Web Video
Web videos are highly welcome. The topic can be freely chosen, but it must have a clear connection to science.

SCIENCE FILM – 360º
Emergent film formats such as 360 ° video productions are also highly welcome. The topic can be freely chosen, but it must have a clear connection to science.
