More Than Honey

Markus Imhoof, 91 min, Documentary, in English and German with English subtitles, 2021
Followed by a panel discussion on biodiversity, environmental protection, cleantech and innovation

Einstein once said: “If the bee disappears from the surface of the Earth, man would have no more than four years left to live.”

Over the past fifteen years, numerous colonies of bees have been decimated throughout the world. The causes of this disaster haven’t yet been established. Depending on the concerned regions of the world, between 50% and 90% of the bees have disappeared.

Seeking answers, the film embarks on a journey to meet with people whose lives depend on bees: to a Swiss beekeeper living on an Alp; to the gigantic almond plantations in California; to a bee brain researcher in Berlin; to a pollen trader in China; and to the killer bees in the Arizona desert. All report on how the bees are vanishing. The film tells us about their lives, and about ours.

“More Than Honey” has won Best Documentary at The German Film Awards, Best Documentary at The Guild of German Art House Cinemas, The Jury Award at Santa Barbara International Film Festival, The Swiss Film Prize for Best Music and Best Documentary and the Bavarian Film Award for Best Documentary. The film was also screened at Locarno International Film Festival and Palm Springs International Film Festival.
