City of Ghosts

Captivating in its immediacy, "City of Ghosts" follows the journey of “Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently” – a handful of anonymous activists who banded together after their homeland was taken over by ISIS in 2014. With astonishing, deeply personal access, this is the story of a brave group of citizen journalists as they face the realities of life undercover, on the run, and in exile, risking their lives to stand up against one of the most extremist and violent groups in the world today.
Directed, produced, and filmed by Academy Award–nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Matthew Heineman for his documentary “Cartel Land”, “City of Ghosts” had its World Premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and participated in dozens international festivals, including Hot Docs and Tribeca Film Festival.
It has won the Grand Jury Award at Sheffield International Documentary Festival, Politiken's Audience Award at CPH:DOX – Copenhagen, the Silver Heart Award at Dallas International Film Festival, the Audience Award at Galway Film Fleadh for Best Human Rights Feature, the In Spirit for Freedom Award for Best Documentary at Jerusalem Film Festival, the Special Jury Prize for Documentary Feature Direction at Montclair Film Festival, the Fritz-Gerlich Prize at Munich Film Festival, the Founders Prize for Citizen Journalism at Traverse City Film Festival and the Courage Under Fire Award from the International Documentary Association.
